RFSD names new assistant superintendent
GLENWOOD SPRINGS ” Brett Gies, a school administrator in Santa Fe, N.M., has been named new assistant superintendent in charge of curriculum in the Roaring Fork School District.
His selection was made public at a school board meeting on Wednesday. Gies will take over July 1, overseeing curriculum, instruction and assessment in the school district that encompasses Basalt, Carbondale and Glenwood Springs public schools.
“We are excited to have Brett coming on board. He brings many talents and is someone who is very in tune with the work we are doing in the district,” Superintendent Judy Haptonstall said in a press release announcing Gies’ appointment. “After reviewing the files of many, many candidates and interviewing many more, the entire hiring committee knew he was the one we had been looking for.”
She also praised the work of current interim Assistant Superintendent Pat Henry, a former longtime district principal who filled in as curriculum director for the current school year.
“We are fortunate that Pat was willing to forego a year of retirement to work with us,” Haptonstall said in the press release.
Gies has 15 years combined experience in educational leadership, school improvement, classroom instruction, organizational management, data analysis, assessment, curriculum and technology, according to the Roaring Fork School District. His degrees include a doctorate in education and a master’s in educational administration, both from the University of Idaho, and a bachelor’s degree in education from Chadron State College in Nebraska. He currently works as the director of research, data, accountability and testing for the Santa Fe Public Schools. His background includes roles as an elementary school principal, sixth-grade teacher and retail store manager.
Gies offered praise for the Roaring Fork district n the press release.
“It is a progressive district that is well-versed in sound research-based practices,” he said. “I hope to use my experience to assist teachers in using data and assessments for learning to implement effective teaching strategies that will allow all students the opportunity to achieve at higher levels.”
