Rifle boys triumphant at Eagle Valley Invitational

GYPSUM, Colorado – Buoyed by a dominating performance in the relay events, Rifle’s boys coasted to victory at Saturday’s Eagle Valley Invitational.

The Bears won the 4×100-meter relay (James Martinez, Tyler Rust, Joe Burgess, Andrew Proebstle; 44.87 seconds), the 4×200 relay (Martinez, Rust, Burgess, Proebstle; 1:31.09), the 4×400 relay (Ryan Davis, Robbie Sjogren, Proebstle, Adolfo Ruiz; 3:31.61) and the 4×800 relay (Jeo Mendez, Davis, Humberto Guerrero, Dustin Ross; 8:34.17).

The success didn’t stop there.

Winning individual events were Ruiz (300 hurdles, 42.94), Rust (high jump; 6 feet, 4 inches), James Martinez (pole vault, 13-0) and Jake Massey (shot put, 43-1).

Taylor Webb nabbed second in the 110 hurdles (16.88). Also finishing second were Ross (1,600, 4:30), Burgess (400, 51.62) and Massey (discus, 113-0).

Ruiz took third in the 110 hurdles (17.13) and Proebstle claimed bronze in the 200 (23.77).

Rifle’s girls had a big day, too.

The Bears placed fourth in the team standings, getting individual event wins from Makayla Wilkins (400, 1:02.9) and Natalie Whitmore (27.66).

Melissa Crow took second in the 200 (28.39) for the Bears. Joey Kuheim was third in the discus (87-4).

Rifle’s 4×200 relay team, which consists of Whitmore, Kathryn Armstrong, Wilkins and Ciara Euler, took first (1:53.34), as did the Bears’ 800 sprint medley team of Armstrong, Haydn Holgate, Whitmore and Wilkins (1:55.93).

Rifle’s 4×100 relay squad took second (52.71).

Coal Ridge’s track teams made a solid showing at Eagle Valley, with the girls taking third and the boys fifth.

Chelyn McCain led the girls, winning both the 100 and 300 hurdles. She clocked in at 15.63 in the former and at 48.33 in the latter.

Ashlie Bowles picked up a win in the triple jump for the Titans (33-10) and Rachel Becker took second in the 100 (13.49).

A Coal Ridge relay team of Kathleen Maldonado, Rachel Becker, Kayla Hinkey and McCain won the 4×100 (52.51).

The Titans picked up relay silver in the 4×200 (1:53.53) and the 4×400 (4:29.83).

Brandon Schlegel led Coal Ridge’s boys, taking third in both the triple jump (40-5 1/4) and the long jump (19-4).

Titan relay teams finished third in both the 4×200 (1:35) and 4×400 (3:36.91).

Taylor and Zach Browning represented Roaring Fork well at Eagle Valley, each winning an event in Gypsum.

Taylor won the 200 (23.69), while Zach won the 400 (51.42). Zach took second in the 200 (23.7) and Taylor nailed down third in the 400 (51.93) and second in the 100 (11.45).
