Rifle District seeking input on gas exploration

RIFLE” The Rifle Ranger District of the White River National Forest is seeking public input regarding a proposal to explore for natural gas on national forest lands about 25 miles southeast of Rifle.

EnCana Oil and Gas Inc. has presented a proposal to the Forest Service to conduct exploratory drilling on EnCana’s federal mineral lease near Flagpole Mountain in Mesa County, according to Larry Sandoval of the Rifle Ranger District.

Under the proposal, EnCana would begin exploration this year by drilling up to five natural gas wells on three new and reconstructed well pads. The exploration would require EnCana to build about 2,400 feet of new access roads and rebuild about 3,400 feet of closed road.

If the wells produced profitable amounts of natural gas, EnCana would then be permitted to install up to 6,400 feet of eight-inch pipeline to connect with existing gathering pipeline. Line heaters, dehydration units and condensation tanks would also be permitted if the wells become profitable.

The lands where the project is proposed are currently managed by the 2002 White River National Forest Land and Resource Management Plan, and any development would be subject to the guidelines of the plan, according to Sandoval.
