Rifle drops its softball opener at Montrose

Post Independent staff report
Glenwood Springs, CO Colorado

There’s nowhere to go but up for Rifle’s softball team.

Starting an all-freshman battery, the rebuilding Bears opened 2010 with a 10-0 loss at Montrose on Friday.

Class 3A Rifle, playing a 4A opponent in the Indians, started Taylor Gore at pitcher and Brittany Neuroth at catcher.

Picking up the Bears’ only hit of the night was Chanler May, a senior from Meeker who’s suiting up for Rifle.

As coach Cindy Skinner anticipated heading into the fall, her team has a rebuilding effort on its hands. The Bears are without a number of girls who helped the team to a 10-9 overall record in 2009.

“I was pleased with many of the things that the girls did,” Bears coach Cindy Skinner said. “They executed plays that we had worked on this week for the game – first-and-third plays, outfield relays, etc.

“Look for our team to continue to improve and finish strong.”

Rifle is new to the Class 3A ranks this season after previously playing at the 4A level.

Next up for the Bears is a Tuesday trip to Delta. The first pitch is slated for 4 p.m.

After that, Rifle travels to the Sept. 3-4 Peach Fuzz Tournament in Grand Junction.

The Bears’ first home game is a Sept. 7 meeting with Palisade. Rifle doesn’t open up 3A Western Slope League play until a home date with Grand valley on Sept. 16.
