Rifle girls win defensive affair at Eagle Valley

Post Independent staff report
Glenwood Springs, CO Colorado

Rifle preserved its perfect record with a 37-32 girls basketball win at Eagle Valley in Gypsum on Tuesday.

Tresa Berner led the Bears, now 17-0 overall, with 12 points in the non-league affair. Jasmine Figueira added eight points and seven rebounds. Racheal Keithley grabbed seven boards.

“Our defense was really good tonight,” Rifle coach Stephanie Heald said. “I was pretty happy with our defense tonight. We played mostly man-to-man, really tight, halfcourt man-to-man, as much as we could to clog up the inside.”

Eagle Valley dropped to 5-17 with the loss.

Rifle returns to 3A Western Slope League play with a trip to Aspen on Thursday. The Bears close out the regular season at Roaring Fork on Saturday.

Baca runner wins it for Devils

Juan Baca sunk a floating runner with 2 seconds remaining to lift Eagle Valley’s boys to a 48-46 win over Rifle on Tuesday.

The host Devils (8-14) trailed by eight points midway through the fourth quarter before a 10-2 run turned the tide.

Rifle dropped to 9-8 overall.
