Rifle gravel pit application withdrawn

RIFLE – Talk of a proposed gravel pit near the entrance of the city has subsided after an incomplete application was withdrawn early this week at the suggestion of the Garfield County planning department. The city received notice last week that United Companies of Mesa County in Grand Junction had submitted an application to the county to construct a gravel pit on the north side of Interstate 70 and the Colorado River and east of the bridge, according to Rifle City Planning Director Matt Sturgeon.”They need permission from the county, and the city of Rifle needs to have input because of the visual issue,” Sturgeon said. “Our main concern is the visibility issue and how it will affect the gateway into Rifle. It will be a fairly large operation.”However, Fred Jarman, assistant planning director for Garfield County, advised the company late last week to withdraw its special use permit request due to issues surrounding the ownership of the property and a proposed conveyor belt across the Colorado River.”The county suggests you withdraw your application until the two aforementioned issues have been adequately addressed at which time you may re-apply to the county and be placed on the next available Planning Commission agenda,” Jarman wrote.Sturgeon said he is confident the company will resubmit the application, and when it does, the city of Rifle needs to make their feelings known.”This is definitely a Rifle issue and we will be monitoring the situation,” Sturgeon said.
