Rifle man accused of trying to kill mom

RIFLE ” A 23-year-old Rifle man is in jail after allegedly trying to try to suffocate his mother with a pillow Monday during a domestic dispute.

Juan Loya, 23, remained in Garfield County Jail Friday after being arrested on charges including attempted murder, menacing, false imprisonment, third-degree assault and harassment.

The incident happened Monday afternoon on McCarron Court, at a residence that police chief Daryl Meisner said he believes Loya and his 45-year-old mother shared.



Meisner said the two reportedly got into an argument. Loya then placed a pillow over her face “and apparently attempted to smother her at that point and then she escaped,” Meisner said.

He said is Loya is accused of then threatening his mother with a knife and tried to keep her from leaving the residence.
