Rifle may field a graduation ceremony after all

RIFLE – It turns out Rifle High School will probably be able to have graduation on the football field after all.It was originally reported that the school would have to hold graduation somewhere else because of a sod project at the school’s football field. Garfield School District Re-2 plans to lay new sod on the RHS football field just a few days before the graduation, scheduled for Sunday, May 21. It was feared the new grass will be too wet and sensitive for the graduates to walk on.Despite the problems presented by fresh sod, the staff and administrators at the school hope to preserve tradition and have graduation on the football field anyway. The graduation has been on the field for about the last 10 years, said RHS principal Todd Ellis. He said the students’ graduation invitations say the ceremony will be on the football field.Ellis said there shouldn’t be a big change to the way the graduation looks. “The preliminary idea is to use the sidelines,” Ellis said. “Right now, we don’t put that much on the field anyway. This way parents will be closer to their kids and friends and family will be closer to seeing them. It might be a blessing in disguise.”The Garfield County Fairgrounds is available on graduation day as a back-up location.”We’re going to do everything in our power to have the graduation on the football field,” said Theresa Hamilton, Re-2 director of districtwide affairs.
