The Rifle Police Department put out some helpful tips for preventing package theft and holiday shopping this year.

Also called Porch Pirate Prevention, Rifle PD recommends that anyone having packages delivered should make sure they track the order or the package and know when they’ll arrive to bring them inside in a timely manner or have a neighbor get them and bring them to you.

Scheduling deliveries for when you’ll be home also gives porch pirates less time to grab those thoughtful gifts; shipping them to a local store, a secure locker pick-up location or the workplace allows less vulnerability to the packages.

Installing security cameras that notify you when someone is at the door if you’re not there can be helpful if a package is taken.

Asking for signature confirmation when shipping can also help, requiring someone to sign for the package to make sure it’s taken inside the house, otherwise, the delivery driver keeps it until you’re there.

Packages aren’t the only things that are vulnerable this holiday season: you as a shopper are too.

With quicker darkening days, the hustle and bustle of looking for gifts and holiday attire, it can be an opportunity for crime.

While shopping, or are just out in the evening, be aware of your surroundings and park in well-lit areas.

Lock your windows, close your doors and hide all gifts and shopping bags in the trunk. Have your keys ready while approaching your vehicle and use the “panic” button on the key fob if you become nervous or are being followed. Lock your doors immediately upon entering the vehicle.

Try to avoid carrying large amounts of cash and keep your purse close to your body. If you don’t have a purse, keep your wallet in an inside pocket or your front pants pocket.

If you’re shopping with kids, teach them to go to a store clerk or security guard if you get separated. Don’t allow your kids to go off by themselves.
