Rifle police offer reward for arson information

RIFLE ” An investigation into three fires started in Rifle early Labor Day morning continues and a reward is now being offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction.

“There’s nothing new, but we’re still working on it and we have 12 investigators working 12-14 hour days,” police chief Daryl Meisner said on Friday. “We’re chasing a lot of leads.”

The investigative team is made up of a task force with the Rifle Police Department, Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Garfield County Sheriff’s Office and the Rifle Fire Protection District.

Police are encouraging anyone with information, or anyone who may have video or camera footage, to call the department. Both the police department and the Rifle Area Chamber of Commerce are accepting pledges to help offer an award for information leading to an arrest and indictment.

The exact amount of the award will not be known until early next week.

“It appears it will be quite significant, but the amount has not yet been disclosed,” Meisner said.

The Rifle Area Chamber of Commerce is also taking pledges toward the arrest of the arsonist and will match up to $2,500, according to chamber executive director Patty Lambert.

The three fires were reported early Monday morning, Sept. 5, and resulted in the loss of the Rifle Fireside Lanes in north Rifle and the Amoco service station at the entrance of town. Damage was also sustained to an apartment complex off 26th Street and there was an attempted fire at the Mi Hacienda restaurant off Highway 13.

Total damages of the fires is estimated at hundreds of thousands of dollars, according to police and fire officials.

The cause of all the fires is considered to be arson by one or more persons.

Those with any information about the fires, or wishing to make pledges, should contact the Rifle Police Department at 625-2271 or 625-8095. Pledges must be made in writing and forms may be obtained by calling or picking up a form at Rifle City Hall. Pledges may also be made to the Rifle Area Chamber of Commerce by calling 625-2085, ext. 3.
