UPDATE: Rifle police respond to juvenile assault incident at downtown park, suspect detained

Rifle police responded at about 5 p.m. Thursday to a serious assault involving juveniles at Centennial Park in downtown Rifle, near the middle school, according to a Rifle Police Department news release.

“Two female juveniles engaged in a verbal argument that quickly escalated into a physical altercation,” an updated release sent Friday morning states. “One female assaulted the other with a sharp edged weapon. The injured juvenile was taken to an area hospital, treated and later released. The other juvenile sustained very minor injuries. She was charged and placed with youth services. “

Police secured the area during the initial response on Thursday, and there was no active threat to the community, the earlier release stated.

“This investigation is ongoing, and, as a matter of Rifle Police Department policy, we are unable to provide further information at this time,” the release states.
