Rifle Veterans Memorial still needs names, funds
Glenwood Springs, CO Colorado
RIFLE, Colorado – If everyone who has pledged money to the addition of the West Garfield County Veterans Memorial in Deerfield Park in Rifle, the project should be close to the $55,000 needed to complete the memorial.
However, as it stands now, it is short about $18,000 and the deadline to submit names of veterans on the memorial was Saturday, Aug. 1.
The American Legion Kelly-Hansen Post 78 in Rifle is in the process of putting in seven stones engraved with the names of people, living or dead, in the area between New Castle and Parachute who have served in the military from the Civil War to the present.
“We want the names of servicemen and women who have served and do not forget the ones who are serving now,” said John Scalzo, a member of the Kelly-Hansen post who is putting the project together. “If your loved ones are in the service and they lived in this area, please send us their names so we can include them on our memorial.”
Donations are also being accepted and those who have pledged funds are urged to make their payment as soon as possible.
“Right now, we’re at a standstill,” said Scalzo. “We’re waiting on money promised from the county and the town of New Castle.”
With more than $20,500 put as a down payment and a little more than $16,000 in the bank, another $18,000 is still needed.
The project was originally planned for four stones with 500 names on each stone – 250 each on the front and back. There are currently 2,072 names slated to be engraved, so a fourth stone will handle the overflow. A sixth stone will tell about the new memorial and a seventh stone will give the history of the original memorial.
The deadline to submit names was Aug. 1. New names to be added will no longer be in alphabetical order. Once the stones are completed, it will cost $50 to have the engraver come to Rifle and add the name to the stone. There is currently room for 300 more names.
“The deadline for the names [was] Aug. 1, when it will be sent to Grand Junction to critique and then we get it back on Aug. 15 and finalize it,” Scalzo said. “On Sept. 1, they start engraving and putting the names in alphabetical order.”
Names submitted after the deadline will be put on the fifth stone randomly and not in alphabetical order.
