Rifle’s boys open Palisade Tournament with lopsided win

Outscoring Moffat County by a 26-9 count in the second quarter, Rifle gunned its way to a 73-56 boys basketball win in its Palisade Tournament opener on Thursday.

Von Church and Rian Creech buoyed the Bears in that momentum-building second quarter. Church scored eight points and drained a pair of 3-pointers in the frame. Creech added seven points.

“We were able to start getting some steals and run a little,” Rifle coach Chris Lowther said. “We hit some shots. It was good.”

Creech finished the night with a team-best 18 points. Church added 16, Fernando Carreon 11 and Taylor Boone 10.

The Bears, who leveled their overall record at 1-1 with Thursday’s victory, will face tourney host Palisade tonight at 6 p.m.

Cortney Cordova’s 26 points led Rifle’s girls to a 53-33 win over Moffat County in their Palisade Tournament opener on Thursday.

“We started out really hard and heavy on defense,” said Bears coach Stephanie Heald, whose team grabbed a 21-11 lead by the end of the first quarter. “They had a really hard time breaking down our defense, and we got some great scoring again from Cortney.”

Makayla Wilkins added 12 points and Rachael Keithley chipped in with seven for the Bears, who improved to 2-0 overall.

Next up for Rifle at the round-robin tournament is a 7:30 p.m. meeting with Palisade tonight.
