Roaring Fork assembly to discuss drinking, driving

Donna Daniels

Roaring Fork High School will hold a special assembly today that school counselor Diane Corbett hopes will wake students up to the dangers of drinking and driving.

The timing of the assembly is right, since Roaring Fork’s prom is Saturday night.

Corbett hopes that the event will catch students’ attention.

They have already been eying a smashed car dropped off in front of the high school this week by a local towing company.

This morning Corbett will explain why the car is there, and speakers will give their perspective on unsafe driving.

They include 2000 RFHS graduate Kasie Burtard, who was severely injured in a January auto accident.

Burtard will speak about the consequences of speeding and not wearing a seat belt.

Also speaking at the assembly will be Garfield County Deputy Coroner Perry Bell.

“He’ll talk about the types of accidents he’s seen,” involving underage drinking and driving, Corbett said.

She’s also borrowed some “gruesome” pictures of accidents from the State Patrol to hang behind the speakers.

“I’ll make the statement that the prom dresses are bought, the corsages ordered, the dinner plans made,” Corbett said.

“We know that, and we’re asking them to really be safe, because we don’t want to lose anyone,” she said. “We’re asking them to think and be safe.”
