Coal Ridge’s hostile gym wasn’t enough to shake the No. 9 3A varsity girls basketball team on Tuesday night.
The Roaring Fork Rams took the short trip down Interstate 70 to face the Coal Ridge Titans on the road, and breezed to their sixth consecutive win 62-34.
Roaring Fork came out swinging, catching the Titans on their heels and taking a gigantic 22-3 lead after one quarter of play. Rams senior Carley Crownhart and sophomore Riley Bevington combined for 14 points in their explosive first quarter.
“We got a lot of steals off the press,” Rams head coach Mike Vidakovich said. “That’s been our bread and butter. We always like to keep the pressure on. We don’t have a physically big team, but we have a lot of athletes.”
The Rams took control of the game from the opening tip and the rest of the game was dictated by the lopsided outcome of the first quarter. The Titans managed to find even footing, but by that point their five-point second quarter victory looked like taking a gallon out of a pond. By halftime, the Titans had chipped the scoreboard down to 33-19 in favor of the visitors, but the crowd never died down thanks to the Coal Ridge band.
Although it was meager, the home team had built some momentum entering the brief 10 minute break, but by the end of the third quarter, the Rams had snuffed the flickering fire. Roaring Fork’s tedious defense held the Titans to another single digit quarter, and were nearing the 50 point mark.
“They play a really tenacious sort of defense,” Vidakovich said. “I always tend to focus on the offensive end, but these girls are really holding teams down pretty well.”
The Rams impressive offense was led by Crownhart, Bevington and junior Nikki Tardif who finished with 15,16, and 12 points respectively.
“We are so intense, even when we are up big,” Crownhart said. “We still all are striving to do our best even when we may be up big or down big. Knowing my teammates always have my back makes me feel very comfortable though.”
The road win is the sixth consecutive victory for the Rams and they improve to 16-1 on the season. Their sole loss came to the only team ahead of them in the 3A Western Slope League, the Cedaredge Bruins.
The Rams will next host Olathe at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. The Titans will next take on the Delta Panthers on Friday, who are currently riding a six game win streak and find themselves in the drivers seat of the 4A Western Slope League.
