Roaring Fork School District school board to hear students’ ideas

CARBONDALE, Colorado ” Roaring Fork School District board of education members will get an earful of ideas from high-schoolers during a student forum at tonight’s regular school board meeting.

“The board has talked about ways of engaging different groups of people, including students,” RFSD Superintendent Judy Haptonstall said. “This is something we did four or five years ago. It’s a good way to hear from students about what’s going on in their schools, for better or worse.”

Each of the district’s four high schools was asked to suggest five students to participate in the forum.

“We wanted students with some different backgrounds,” Haptonstall said.

School board members will take notes in smaller groups, followed by a larger group discussion of some of the student ideas. The student comments will then be shared with high school principals and staff.

The public portion of Wednesday’s school board begins at 4:30 p.m. at Roaring Fork High School in Carbondale. The student forum is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Also on the board’s agenda for tonight’s meeting will be the formal naming of the new Glenwood Springs High School theater as the Jeannie Miller Theater, in honor of the late Glenwood Springs musician and music teacher; a report from YouthZone; and continued discussion of wait list parameters for out-of-district and out-of-attendance area students at Sopris and Basalt elementary schools.
