A rockslide this morning has closed Interstate 70 through Glenwood Canyon, the Colorado Department of Transportation said.

The slide is just west of the Hanging Lake tunnels in the eastbound lanes at about mile marker 125, a common spot for rockfall.

A CDOT geological hazard crew is en route to assess the situation, requiring the agency to close the interstate in both directions between Glenwood Springs and Dotsero.

“There’s still some movement on the slope,” CDOT spokeswoman Tracy Trulove said.

It’s unknown how long the closure, which began at 8:22 a.m., would last, Trulove said.

Participate in The Longevity Project

The Longevity Project is an annual campaign to help educate readers about what it takes to live a long, fulfilling life in our valley. This year Kevin shares his story of hope and celebration of life with his presentation Cracked, Not Broken as we explore the critical and relevant topic of mental health.

She said seven to eight 1-ton boulders fell onto the interstate. No vehicles were involved and no one was hurt.

Guy Patterson, De Beque’s town manager, was stopped by the slide and emailed pictures to the Post Independent. He said cracks and other damage to the road was obvious.

This story will be updated as new information becomes available.
