Rodeos, royalty and exhibits kick off 2005 Garfield County Fair this week
RIFLE Themed Meeting in the Middle, the Garfield County Fair and Rodeo starts this weekend with several events focused on the areas youth.At 2 p.m. Sunday, gymkhana equestrian events for age groups including 9 and under, 9 through 13, 14 through 18, and 19 and up returns to the Garfield County Fairgrounds outdoor arena. Entries for flag racing, pole bending, barrel racing and keyhole competitions will be accepted from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. the day of the show. No late entries will be accepted.Also on Sunday, the Garfield County royalty will be named. Preliminaries are from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. ,and finals are at 6:30 p.m. in the Rifle High School auditorium.The Junior Rodeo for ages 18 and under will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the fairgrounds. From barrel racing to bull riding, the competition will provide entertainment for rodeo fans of all ages.Serious rodeo fans will get their chance to take in all the action on Wednesday and Thursday when the Colorado Pro Rodeo Association gets underway at 7 p.m. each night. The event features bareback and saddle bronco riding, ladies barrel racing, bull riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling and rodeo clowns.Fair exhibits will be open all week a the fairgrounds. Messaging from CDOT changes, but Independence Pass is noted as closed on its website but not for mudslides
Independence Pass east of Aspen is listed as closed according to the state’s transportation department, but the road was not shut down Wednesday because of mudslides but rather to lessen traffic.
