Roll into The Whimsical Wagon for unique gift ideas
What does your business do? We sell gifts, candy and coffee. Some of the items we have are Trollbeads, Crabtree & Evelyn, Willow Tree Angels, Bear Foot Bears, Big Sky Carver, Jelly Belly’s, Webkinz, wine accessories including Lolita wine glasses, fashionable purses, candles, greeting cards, gift mugs, Mrs. Meyers clean day and many seasonal items, way too numerous to list. Our espresso is by Boyd’s coffee company and is awesome. What sets your business apart from the competition? The Whimsical Wagon is a unique gift shop that has such a wide range of items to purchase to get that someone special a nice gift for a reasonable price. It is conveniently located on Main Street in Silt for easy access. We offer friendly customer service and feel our customers are our family. We have about 1,200 square feet packed full of items and it is so fun, I have customers tell me all the time that they have to go through the store two or three times to see everything. What is your key for surviving the recession? We have been in business for almost eight years now, and the past couple of years have proven very challenging in our hard economic times. We continue to strive for friendly and excellent customer service. If your purchase is for someone as a gift we are happy to add personal touches to your gift item by either placing it in a shopper bag with tissue or gift wrapping it, something you can’t get from the Internet. We try at every occasion to buy USA made products, and we keep our prices very reasonable. We have a peaceful atmosphere, and the store has a relaxing, homey feeling. What strategy do you use to hire good employees? The Whimsical Wagon is owner operated, so we have not had employees in the past. I would say if I were to hire employees in the future I would look for a friendly, professional individual that enjoys working in retail and enjoys people. After all if you don’t have customers then you don’t have a business. What is your plan for growth in the next year in products, services or quality? I have been growing my inventory more into items that are fun and practical. We have just expanded our store for wine accessories and next year plan to increase our baby gifts and some new fashion accessories and housewares. What do you enjoy about running a business here? I love having my business here. I have lived in Silt for 20 years and have been fortunate enough to start a business that is fun and unexpected. I have the pleasure of being able to bring my dog to work every day, and she has proven to be a very good customer service representative. I think my customers come in to see her more then they do me. To have the store located in the town I live in is a plus. I feel like The Whimsical Wagon is an important part of our little town, and I have many of my customers voice that to me on a daily basis. The No. 1 reason I enjoy my business here is because of the customers. They make my day, and I am very blessed to have this business as a part of my everyday life.
