Ron Paul, President of the Roaring Fork Valley?

Phillip YatesGlenwood Springs, CO Colorado

The spotlight might be on John McCain and Hillary Clinton after their stirring comeback wins in New Hampshire on Tuesday, but it seems some local residents want the light to shine on another candidate. According to an unscientific Post Independent web poll, readers favor Ron Paul – and by a large margin.Out of 924 votes cast by early Wednesday, Paul received 615, or 66 percent. The candidate with the second largest number of votes was Barack Obama, who received a diminutive 65 votes or about 7 percent of the total votes. It should be noted that many of these votes have been registered from users outside of the Roaring Fork Valley.”If Ron Paul is not elected, I am afraid our country is doomed,” commented one of many readers supporting Paul. Barry Maggert, a local Libertarian, Carbondale business owner and columnist for the Valley Journal in Carbondale, is one of those who is a part of what some are calling the Ron Paul “revolution.” Paul is a Republican with Libertarian leanings.”I thought I would never do it,” Maggert wrote in his last column. “Last month I registered as a Republican! Forget global warming, I think hell may be freezing over.”I haven’t voted for a Republican in 20 years. Why the switch? Ron Paul,” Maggert wrote.Maggert ended his column by saying, “Love the revolution – the Ron Paul revolution.”In New Hampshire, Paul finished in fifth place with close to 18,000 votes (8 percent of the vote)
