Rosemary Frankel Furman, 72, passed away on Monday after an 11-year battle with Alzheimera€™s disease. Tall, elegant, and beautiful to the end, Rosemary exhibited a remarkable zest for life and humanitarian pursuits. After earning a Bachelora€™s Degree from Barnard College and a mastera€™s degree in English Literature from the University of Miami and a career as an accomplished journalist, she went on to get a law degree in her 40s.

She used that degree to help those most in need, specializing in victimsa€™ rights and first amendment cases. Rosemary won a landmark case against the city of Miami in defense of day laborers. A driven philanthropist, Rosemary served on the Boards of Barnard College, the Aspen Music Festival, and several social service organizations in Miami. In 2001, she created the Rosemary F. Furman Counseling Center at Barnard College, which employs 14 full-time counselors and tends to more than 35% of the student population each year.

Rosemary loved the outdoors, an avid hiker and sports enthusiast. She leaves behind a husband of 51 years, Richard, two daughters, Katherine Pasik and Lizabeth Sandler, their husbands Timothy Pasik and Randal Sandler and five wonderful grandchildren a€” William, Aerin, and Jessica Pasik and Margaret and Theodore Sandler. Funeral services will be held in Miami Beach on Friday morning at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alzheimera€™s Drug Discovery Foundation, http://www.alzdiscovery.org.
