Saddam-Osama link clear to officials

Bob Anderson

Dear Editor,

The latest issue of The Weekly Standard quotes a secret memo written on Oct. 27 by the Undersecretary of Defense for Policy as saying, “Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein had an operational relationship from the early ’90s to 2003 that involved training in explosives and weapons of mass destruction, logistical support for terrorist attacks, al Qaeda training camps and safe haven in Iraq, and Iraqi financial support for al Qaeda , perhaps even for Mohammed Atta.”

The DOD, of course, has denied that these reports are accurate. They claim it merely reported “raw” data and was never a report of an analysis of the relationship between Iraq and al-Qaida.

It is obvious the administration is becoming very careful when saying what it knows or does not know concerning that relationship. Considering how the leftists have slammed the president over the war, that is totally understandable.

If these reports are indeed factual, there can be no doubt that Saddam was plotting with al-Qaida to kill Americans. The only real question remains what was the link to the 9-11 terrorists.

President Clinton said in a 1998 speech, “Saddam would work with an unholy axis of terrorists, drug traffickers and organized international criminals. We have to defend our future from these predators of the 21st Century. There is no more clear example of this threat than Saddam.”

President Bush is doing exactly that. Defending our future.

“All power, even the most despotic, rests ultimately on opinion.” ” David Hume
