Salazar pushing for Roan Plateau, oil shale in energy bill
DENVER (AP) ” Sen. Ken Salazar, D-Colo., says he’s hopeful that Congress will approve a new energy bill before year’s end, but it likely won’t include a requirement that utilities produce more power from renewable energy sources.
Salazar said during a teleconference with Colorado reporters Wednesday that the Senate is about three votes short of the 60 needed to keep the renewable energy standard in the bill.
The bill won’t include a provision in an earlier House version to restrict natural gas drilling on western Colorado’s Roan Plateau. But Salazar said he will keep pushing to include the measure in an appropriations bill.
He’s also pursuing a measure to slow down moves by the federal government to pursue commercial oil shale development. Much of the region’s oil shale reserves are in western Colorado.
