Same-sex relationships just as valuable

Dear Editor,

This is in response to Mr. Doran’s letter regarding same-sex marriage.

In your letter, Mr. Doran, you managed to insult not only the members of the gay community in our valley, but also the open-mindedness of those people who accept gays as part of our society.

You stated that when you grew up, “marriage was very special, and still is.”

Well, times haven’t changed that much. Love and marriage are still special in any relationship, whether it is between a man and a woman, two women, or two men.

Why should love between same-sex individuals be worth any less than love between heterosexuals? How can love between two people be “devalued”? What authority do you have to make this judgment?

You categorized gays with criminals and bums. Gays are not the reason we have crime on our streets, poverty in our neighborhoods and especially not the reason for an alarmingly high teen pregnancy rate.

The reality is that there are gays all over this valley. They are serving your food, auditing your taxes, delivering your mail, repairing your car, and, yes, even teaching your children in our schools. Many are in loving, monogamous relationships. They may even be sitting next to you in church.

I applaud the “Voices” for letting their opinions be heard.
