DENVER, Colorado – Rifle’s Larry Schmueser and James Martinez kicked off their state championship quests with wins in the first round of the state wrestling tournament on Thursday.

Schmueser, a 130-pounder, scored a two-point move in overtime to top Elizabeth’s Jacob Garza, 8-6.

Martinez, wrestling at 140 pounds, pinned Fort Morgan’s Derek Gray in just 1 minutes, 10 seconds. Martinez finished third at state last year.

“Both those guys definitely have a mission,” Rifle coach John Wisniewski said.

The Bears’ four other Class 4A state qualifiers didn’t fare as well.

Keaton Deere (119 pounds) was pinned by Frederick’s Caleb Downs in 3:16.

Matt Barrett dropped an 11-8 decision to Skyline’s Jarrod Bechtold at 152 pounds.

Tyler Davis (171) was pinned by Mesa Ridge’s Phillip Rhodes in 2:56 and heavyweight Nick Mellon lost by fall to Longmont’s Scotland Coyle in 1:57.

Glenwood Springs’ lone state qualifier, Chris Ayala, lost his match to Mountain View’s Daniel Landry, 16-4.
