Search for kayaker suspended; survival considered ‘unrealistic’

The search for a kayaker missing after a weekend excursion in the Crystal River has been suspended, the Gunnison County sheriff said today.

“At this point the victim’s chance of survival is considered unrealistic,” Sheriff Richard Besecker said in a news release.

Uriah Shaffer, 39, reportedly overturned his kayak Saturday after entering the river below Marble with four other men.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Mr. Shaffer,” Besecker’s statement said.

The search was halted at approximately 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

“All cold water dive and traverse team activity is discontinued indefinitely,” the statement said. “Periodic searches from the bank will continue.”
