Seeing a merry Christmas

Sandrell Ford is seeing Christmas in a different light this year. The 18-year-old Hurricane Katrina evacuee received a free vision exam and eyewear from Dr. Mark Zilm at 20/20 Eyecare. Zilm also treated her brothers and sisters, of the Prince family from New Orleans, to Christmas toys.”The doctor said she could pick any frame and he would donate any type of lenses,” 20/20 optician Angie Majeres said. “The store was open to her.”Along with more than $500 in vision services donated, 20/20 footed the bill for toys for Sandrell’s brothers and sisters. Majeres and her mother – visiting from Minnesota – shopped for 212 hours at Target.”They’re just a genuinely nice family,” said Majeres, who has worked at 20/20 for six months. “I got something for all the family members. Everyone can play with everything. I felt like this was something I could do to make the kids happy.”Majeres bought the teenage boys laser guns and the younger Prince family siblings laser swords, a Godzilla race track, a V-Tech Learning Computer and Fairytopia Barbies that light up.”I felt like I was doing a good little deed even though Dr. Zilm was paying for it,” Majeres said. “He’s just a quiet, giving man who likes to stay out of the spotlight. He’s just a giving person.”Contact April Clark: aclark@postindependent.com
