A free Literary Night at the Glenwood Spring Branch Library will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, Thunder River Theatre Companys Valerie Haugen will give a lecture on author Kurt Vonnegut, and will also read from his books. Valerie Haugen is Associate Artistic Director and Founding Member of Thunder River Theatre Company. Enjoy conversation and light refreshments on a cold winters night. The 2009 Naturalist Nights speaker series kicks off with Colorados Red Rock Canyon Country at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7 at Dos Gringos Burritos in Carbondale. Dinner and drinks can be purchased before the free slide show, hosted by the Wilderness Workshop.The show will also be presented at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, at the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies.Presenter Kate Graham of the Colorado Environmental Coalition will lead a photographic journey into the beautiful sights, rich history, and current efforts to protect the red rock of Colorados Dominguez Canyons and Dolores River Basin. Join staff from Roaring Fork Conservancy, and Pitkin County Open Space and Trails from 5:30-7 p.m. Jan. 7, to explore open space by moonlight on snowshoes. Meet at the Emma Schoolhouse parking lot. Or join Roaring Fork Conservancy and Pitkin County Open Space and Trails from 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 8, to explore James H. Smith Northstar Open Space on snowshoes. Bring your own snowshoes or use a provided pair. These events are part of Roaring Fork Conservancys 2009 Watershed Explorations and are sponsored by Pitkin County Open Space & Trails, the Roaring Fork Club, and Roaring Fork Conservancy. Roaring Fork Valley Quilters quilt show will open with a reception for the artists from 5-7 pm. Wednesday, Jan. 7 at the Aspen Chapel Gallery. This exhibition is the 12th consecutive show since the Gallery opened in June, 1985. It will run through Feb 15. Participating artists include Cynthia DeFrancia, Susan Dodington, Aspen; Adele Plantec, Snowmass Village; Jonne Winter, Carbondale; Sandy Boyd, Linda Cheney, B Anne Greene, and Kathleen Molitor, Glenwood Springs. The show was curated by Sandy Boyd.To get to the Aspen Chapel, use the Castle Creek Road exit from the roundabout to Meadowood Drive. The Glenwood Hot Springs Pool will be closed for regularly scheduled maintenance on Wednesday, Jan. 7. This is a great opportunity to spend time at the Glenwood Hot Springs Athletic Club where guests can purchase a day pass and have use of the steam room, sauna, and all the new Club amenities. Please note the indoor whirlpool will not be available due to maintenance.
