RIFLE, Colorado – Burglars struck the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Rifle either Friday night or early Saturday morning.

According to the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a burglary call on Aug. 1, at 9:20 in the morning.

The church, located at 86 Village Drive, reportedly received close to $2,400 in damage, and about $2,000 worth of audio-visual equipment was taken, according to a Sheriff’s Office report.

The Rifle Police Department was not involved in investigating the crime. As of Monday evening, the Sheriff’s Office was following up on some leads, but no arrests had been made.

Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Holly Hopple said that the Sheriff’s Office was not releasing any other information pertaining to the investigation.

Pastor Dave Bottroff said that damage to the church included a couple of broken windows, damage to doors and woodwork within the building,

“I don’t know what they were looking for,” Bottroff said. “They were probably looking for money, but there wasn’t any at the church.”

He said that it appeared that a person or persons were breaking into rooms searching for something, but that there wasn’t any specific vandalism.

In the 10 years since Bottroff has been a pastor at the church, he said that this is the third burglary he can remember. Besides Saturday’s event, Bottroff said that the church had been burglarized about one year ago, as well. He said that as far as he was aware, no arrests were made in that case.
