Shooter in teen fight sought

An arrest warrant was issued by the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday afternoon for a suspect wanted in connection with a fight that occurred the afternoon of April 3 at Transfer Trail.

Deputies are on the lookout for Samuel Ortega-Cereceres, 18, of Rifle, but as of Wednesday afternoon, they hadn’t been able to find him.

“We don’t know where he is,” Sheriff’s Department spokesman Ron VanMeter said. “We’ve been looking for him, and we’ll continue looking for him.”

Ortega is charged with felony menacing for shooting a black-colored revolver during the fight. The gunfire didn’t hit anyone.

He is described as a Hispanic male, about 5 feet 7 inches tall, about 180 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. VanMeter said although one witness said he knew Ortega because he went to school with him, it was not reported which school he was talking about.

The fight apparently involved some Glenwood Springs High School students and some nonstudents who were around high school age.

VanMeter said there were only two combatants in the fight, but 15 Glenwood Springs students and nonstudents looked on. One of the fight combatants was treated at Valley View Hospital and released.
