Shooting suspects released

Ninth Judicial District Attorney Martin Beeson decided not to file charges against Sergio Esteban Ramirez, one of two men suspected to be involved with a July 29 police officer shooting.

Beeson said that Mauricio Villa Garcia Pena, a second suspect in the officer shooting case, will also be released.

“It signifies no failure whatsoever,” Beeson said after a hearing for formal filing of charges. Beeson and Garfield County Sheriff Lou Vallario said it was a strategic decision made to buy more time in the investigation, rather than work underneath the time constraints of the court. They said they can’t comment on whether or not charges would be filed against either man in the future, but said the investigation will come to fruition.

“You have the sheriff and investigators crowing about how everything came together and they were just terribly wrong, and the sad thing is that the real shooters will probably never be discovered now,”said Ted Hess, attorney for Ramirez.

A Glenwood Springs police officer was shot in the chest, hitting a bulletproof vest on July 29 while on patrol at a vehicle impound lot near the Glenwood Springs Airport. The officer sustained minor injuries.
