Shopping downtown gets easier

Want to do your holiday shopping in downtown Glenwood Springs but just can’t find the time? Retail shops on both sides of the Grand Avenue bridge across the Colorado River are going to make it easier for shoppers to buy locally this season by staying open until 8 p.m. every Thursday through Dec. 23. Tonight kicks off the Downtown Development Authority’s late night holiday shopping hours. From 5-8 p.m., dozens of shops – including clothing boutiques, florists, gift and jewelry stores from Sixth to 11th streets, are participating in the promotion.Cindy Svatos is a member of the DDA’s subcommittee, the Downtown Retail and Restaurant Committee, that organized the holiday shopping evenings.”So many businesses have committed to keeping their doors open on Thursday nights during the holidays,” Svatos said. In preparation for the holidays, the DDA held a window dressing contest for downtown retailers on Wednesday evening. The winners and runners-up were not available by press time.”I wouldn’t want to be a judge!” said Svatos. “Some of those windows are so beautiful.” For some retailers, like the Book Train on Grand Avenue, staying open late is nothing new.”We’re open until 8 p.m. anyway on weekdays and until 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays,'” said book store manager Carole O’Brien. “It’s a great social time. Having a lot of shops open on Thursday nights is a wonderful idea. It’s such a nice opportunity to visit with friends and neighbors.”Contact Carrie Click: 945-8515, ext.
