Shops break out ski plans for season

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado ” It’s almost here. The year is slowly grinding it’s way into another ski season.

Soon the snow will be accumulating in the high country, and below, and there will be enough snow for the first tracks of the season.

It’s the time of year when people scavenge through their garage and storage sheds, retrieving equipment and dusting it off for another year on the slopes.

For those who don’t own equipment, or just like using rentals, or perhaps are first time winter sport enthusiasts, there are several options in Glenwood for affordable equipment.

Last year, Sunlight Ski and Bike Shop in Glenwood Springs started a Buy Back Program for juniors. The program focuses on parents with growing youngsters, for an option besides having to purchase new equipment for their little skiers year after year.

“It’s worked out really well, last year,” said sales representative for Sunlight Ski and Bike Shop, Jake Taufer. “It’s good equipment, you own it outright, pass it down to kids, you can sell it at ski swap if you want or you can come see us the next year.”

Since it was the first year for purchases, they won’t know how well it’s worked until people begin returning last year’s equipment for exchange. But store manager, Rob Jankovsky expects the crowds any day now.

“When it snows, then everyone’s here and they want their skis yesterday,” Jankovsky said.

This Buy Back Program allows for people to purchase a ski package, including skis, boots, bindings, and ski polls, either new or used at a discounted price rather than purchasing them separately. The next year, when the kids have already outgrown their ski boots, the equipment can be exchanged for another year’s set up of new or used equipment at a reduced price.

“The nice thing with the used package, if you have kids who’s feet grow throughout the year, you can come in as many times as you need throughout the year and exchange them for another pair,” Taufer said. “Or, if you start them off on a short ski and they advance throughout the year to a longer ski, we can exchange them, too.”

The Buy Back Program allows purchasers to own the equipment outright, but it gives them the option to exchange the equipment for another new or used set up with a 50 percent credit. They can also keep the equipment for two years, at which point, if they choose to return it for another set up, they will still get a 25 percent credit to put toward a new set of skis. However, the program is only available for skis, snowboard packages are available but not as part of the buy back program.

Daily rentals are also available for those just wanting to test their legs.

Other stores in Glenwood, including Mountain Sports Outlet and Sports Authority, offer similar season rentals as Sunlight Ski and Bike Shop on both skis and snowboards. While Summit Canyon Mountaineering doesn’t offer season rental packages they do offer daily and multi-day rentals for telemark skis, alpine touring, and cross country. Those packages include skis, boots, bindings, and polls.

With Loveland and Arapahoe Basin ski areas already open in the state, department manager at Sports Authority, James Eastop, has been busy renting season packages.

“We’ve probably sold about 50 so far this year,” Eastop said. “People know to get in early, by November, or there won’t be anything left.”

The earlier the better, because as soon as you know it the first tracks will be upon us.
