Should the Bible be taken literally?

Jimmy Soule

Dear Editor,

How many of the protesters at the Alabama Court House prominently display the 10 Commandments in their living rooms?

How many can even recite them?

How come hippies and other protesters are required to have permits and are restricted to “free speech zones?”

How come the Ten Commandments are never fully quoted as in Exodus 20:5-6, “You must not bow down to graven images nor be induced to serve them, because I, Jehovah your God, am a God exacting exclusive devotion, bringing punishment for the error of the fathers upon the sons to the third generation and upon the fourth generation in the case of those that hate me, but exercising loving kindness toward the thousandth generation in the case of those who love me and keep my commandments.”

Does this mean that the second, third, and fourth generations are predestined for punishment?

How many people keep the Sabbath, which is either Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, and is mandatory punishable by stoning to death if not kept holy?

How many people believe the correct translation is “thou shalt not kill,” or is it, “thout shalt not murder?” How many people have not died because of this admonishment?

How many people think that the entire book of Leviticus is full of commandments, many of which proscribe certain death for such infractions as adultery, homosexuality and sassing parents?

How many Bible-thumping, sanctimonious, pompous, pontificating Christians are hypocrites?
