SILT, Colorado – The Board of Trustees here is considering rezoning the land known as the Silt River Preserve, on the south side of the river opposite the town proper, as a public utility zone.

An ordinance to that effect is on the board’s agenda for its regular meeting at 7 p.m. tonight in Town Hall.

The Silt River Preserve is 132 acres of open space that the town purchased in 2010 and annexed in 2011, primarily to preserve riparian habitat and river access for hikers, boaters and fishing enthusiasts.

In 2010, the town contemplated improvement to the property such as river access, a boat ramp, parking areas, restrooms, trails, educational waysides, a community garden site and possible pedestrian-bridge connections across the river.

A natural gas well is on the property, confirmed Town Administrator Pamela Woods.

She said the rezoning has nothing to do with that well, however, or the potential for other industrial activities on the property.

“It’s going to stay the way it is,” she said, explaining that the rezoning is in keeping with the town’s reworked land use codes and philosophies.

In other action, the Board of Trustees will hold a public hearing on a permanent moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries or other marijuana-related businesses within the town.

Also on the agenda are proposed special events permits for concerts on June 9 and Aug. 17 at the Stoney Ridge Pavilion.
