SILT, Colorado – The body of Jon B. Beck, 57, of Silt was found in an irrigation ditch in Silt shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday, according to Silt Police Chief Levy Burris.

There were no indications of foul play, Burris reported. The cause of death was not known as of Monday afternoon, as Burris was awaiting results from an autopsy and toxicology tests.

Burris said three young boys out for a walk found the body at 2:44 p.m. lying in the Cactus Valley Ditch on the north side of town between Eighth and Ninth streets.

Burris said the water in the ditch was an average of three feet deep, and the body was partially submerged.

The boys, after making the discovery, called police on a cell phone and waited at the scene until police and ambulance personnel arrived. Beck was identified once he had been pulled from the ditch.

It was not known whether Beck drowned, the chief said, what circumstances led him to be near the ditch, or how long he had been in the ditch.

Burris asked that anyone with knowledge of Beck’s activities after about 6:30 p.m. on Saturday to please call the Silt police department at 876-2735.

Beck was married, Burris said, but he was uncertain what he did for a living or if he had children.

The autopsy was being conducted in Grand Junction, by a private contractor, The Pathology Group Inc., according to a spokesman from the Garfield County Coroner’s office.
