SILT, Colorado – An act of vandalism has law enforcement officials scratching their, ah, heads over who knocked off the head of the locally famous naked climber, part of the sculpture on the Main Street roundabout at the entrance to town.

According to a report from the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, the damage was inflicted some time between April 13 and April 16, when “vandals caused significant damage to the head of the climber.”

The statement suggested the damage may be irreparable.

The figure sparked controversy in 2009 when local sculptor Blaine Peters, working on commission from the town, installed the piece at the roundabout.

The sculpture, which is made of Styrofoam, metal and concrete, features the climbing human figure, facing in to the rock, and several examples of local wildlife.

The sheriff’s office is offering a $1,000 “Crimestoppers” reward for information leading to the arrest and indictment of the a suspect or suspects in the case.
