Silt offers cash to spruce up downtown

SILT – There’s free money out there if you’ve got a commercial building in the town’s business district and want to make improvements. The town of Silt set aside $5,000 in grant money this year to allow business owners to receive a $1,000 matching grant to spruce up their store fronts.”We set aside $5,000 from the general fund for beautification of the downtown buildings,” said Meredith Robinson, a Silt Town Trustee. So far, two applications have been received – Gross Locker Plant on Front Street and Whimsical Wagon on Main Street have both applied.”We have two applicants now, but any (downtown business owner) can apply,” Robinson said. “This is an effort to beautify the town.”While there are no strict architectural guidelines for making the improvements, Robinson said the town would like to keep with the Western theme as outlined in its comprehensive plan. The applicant must match the grant with at least $1,000 or more of their own money.”People can apply and the town will consider it,” Robinson said. “And depending how much you’re going to do, we may require a building permit.”
