Silt trustee Dennis Mahan dies at 67

SILT ” He was known as a dependable, reliable, level-headed employee who was devoted to his job at the town of New Castle, the public office he held in the town of Silt and a devout member of his church congregation.

Longtime former New Castle police chief and Silt town trustee Dennis Mahan died Friday night at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center in Denver.

Mahan reportedly died of complications from pneumonia after surgery. He was 67.

Mahan served as police chief for the town of New Castle from 1990 to 1998, according to former town administrator Steve Rippy. He had worked as support captain for New Castle’s police department since 1999.

“As the police chief, he was what the town was looking for,” Rippy said. “He was not overly aggressive ” he was very reliable. And he got along very well with the other employees. When he took over as the records clerk, he did a lot more than that. He acted as a mentor for the new officers.”
