Ski Spree a blast from start to finish

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado – Ski Spree, the annual mid-winter conflagration of crazy races, contests, competitive chili, live music and fireworks, is coming up on Saturday at Sunlight Mountain Resort.

Sponsored by ANB Bank, Ski Spree is a day that’s fun for locals and visitors, and everyone is invited.

Here’s the line-up:



Broomball Tournament: Registration begins at 9 a.m., and involves teams of six, with at least one woman on the ice at all times; $40 entry fee per team. Tournament play begins at noon at the base lodge. All proceeds benefit Grizzly Hockey.

Need-4-Speed Race: Register in the lodge starting at 8 a.m., $15 entry fee per skier. Races from the top of Joslin start at 10 a.m. Break out your long boards and favorite racing outfit to compete for the title of fastest skier or boarder. Competitors have been known to hit speeds of 77 mph.



Rail Jam Contest: Register in guest services starting at 9 a.m., $15 entry fee per rider. Contest will be held starting at 4 p.m. right in front of the Sundeck, so be prepared for audience reactions.

Chili Cook-Off: 30 contestants from the valley’s best restaurants – as well as home cooks – will vie for the title of Best Chili starting at 3 p.m. A $10 Ski Spree button gets you in to taste as many of the entries as you can. Buy a Ski Spree button on the mountain or in advance at ANB Bank, Glenwood Insurance, Crystal River Spas or Sunlight Ski and Bike Shop.

Live music: The Missing Link Band will be jamming in the lodge all afternoon and evening.

Awards ceremony: 5 p.m.

Torchlight parade and fireworks: 6 p.m.
