GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. Expect sun with a chance of big hair, fluorescent colors and one-piece ski suits. Sunlight Mountain holds its 20th annual Skier Appreciation Day Friday, Jan. 5. The party’s theme this year is bringing back the ’80s.”‘Walk Like an Egyptian’ was playing on the radio, and Ferris Bueller was taking the day off,” Marketing Manager Lauren Yant said in an e-mail. “Greg LeMond won the Tour de France, and Mike Tyson won his first world boxing title. Add to that the births of the Olsen twins, Lindsay Lohan and the ‘flying tomato,’ Shaun White, and 1986 was pretty darn cool. But the best thing about 1986? Lift tickets at Sunlight Mountain were only $15.”Sunlight is selling $15 tickets for the day, or $12 tickets if purchased in advance. Skier Appreciation Day features a costume party, drink specials, live music by Gwen Hill and DJ Rockin’ Rob and a live remote radio broadcast by KSPN.Whoever best represents the ’80s with their attire and attitude will win prizes, including lift tickets, skis or a snowboard and an “’80s fun pack.””So show your ‘true colors,'” Yant said, “Cyndi Lauper style!” Discounted $12 tickets are available at the Sunlight Mountain Resort Guest Services office, Sunlight’s downtown Ski and Bike Shop and the Glenwood Springs’ Community Bank location through Thursday, Jan. 4. Tickets may also be purchased on the day of the event at the Sunlight Ticketing Office for $15. All ticket sales proceeds go to the Garfield County United Way.Garfield County Re-1 and Re-2 school district students and teachers won’t be totally left out. Students who attend school on Skier Appreciation Day will receive a ticket voucher redeemable for a $10 lift ticket for Sunday, Jan. 14. Teachers with a voucher and documentation of employment can ski for free that day. Vouchers will be distributed by the school districts.Sunlight Mountain, Lafarge, Community Banks of Colorado, Design Workshop, the Post Independent and KSPN are celebrating the event.
