If Monday’s Soda Pop Open is any indicator of how the forthcoming high school boys golf season will play out, then Aspen High’s in good shape.

Ryan Smith, a senior for the Skiers, carded a 1-under-par 69 at Glenwood Springs Golf Club to win the annual junior tournament.

Basalt’s Tristan Rohrbaugh finished second in the boys 16- to 18-year-old division with a 74. He placed ahead of Palisade’s Kyler Smith, who matched Rohrbaugh’s 74, via playoff.

Ryan Smith’s high school teammate, Clayton Crawford, placed fifth with a 76, one stroke and one place behind Basalt’s Dylan Rakowski.

“We had a strong field, especially with the boys 13-15 and 16-18 divisions,” Glenwood Springs Golf Club head pro Greg Gortsema said. “Any time you get a 69, that’s pretty solid.”

Scores were low across the board for the teenage boys.

Rifle’s Ty Caron shot a 75 to top the field in the boys 13-15 age group. Glenwood’s Peter Steckler shot a 77 to take second and Skyler Miller an 81 to nab third.

Other division winners were: Maya Freismuth, 101, girls 16-18; Martha Baker, 57, girls 13-15 (nine holes); Gabriel Porges, 46, boys 10-12 (nine holes); Lauren Murphy, 52, girls 10-12 (nine-holes); Logan Radtke, 19, boys 9-and-under (three holes); Sarah Murphy, 34, girls 9-and-under (three holes).

The high school boys golf season begins for most local schools with an Aug. 11 tournament at Battlement Mesa Golf Club.
