Slate of candidates running for local boards
Post Independent Staff
A total of 10 out of 15 seats on the school boards at Roaring Fork Re-1, Garfield Re-2 and Garfield No. 16 school districts are up for election. Voters will decide Nov. 4 which candidates will take those seats.
For some, it’s a given. Five candidates – Peter Delany in Re-1, Jan Hubbell and Howard Stapleton in Re-2, and Ron Palmer and Jodi Williams in No. 16 – are running unopposed.
For the candidates seeking 10 other seats, it will be a test.
Roaring Fork School District Re-1
It’s a male-dominated race for the five spots open in Re-1. Only one woman – incumbent Sue Hakanson – has turned in a petition to run in the November election.
In District A (Basalt area), three candidates are running for a two-year term currently held by Bill Shirley. Besides Shirley, who took over for Bruce Matherly when he resigned from the board in June, Michael Bair and Robert Shaw Guion are running.
In District B (Carbondale area), board president Robin Garvik is stepping down. Brad Zeigal and Rio Jacober are running for a four-year term in that district.
In Director District C (Glenwood Springs area), appointed incumbent Bruce Wampler is running against Robert Arrington and Rick Chavez for a four-year term.
Incumbent Sue Hakanson is running against Ken Melby for a four-year term in District D (Glenwood Springs area).
And running unopposed is Peter Delany for a two-year term in District E (Basalt area).
It’s unusual for all five seats to be open at the same election. The seats are designed to be staggered so two seats are open at one time, and three at another.
But since the 2000 election the board has appointed three new members, Peter Delany, Bruce Wampler and Bill Shirley. The seats held by Delany and Shirley are set to run through 2005, but by law voters must have a chance to decide whether to elect them at the election following their appointment.
Re-1 superintendent Fred Wall said he’s speaking with Glenwood Springs High School teacher Mike Wilde about organizing a public forum night for all the candidates. The date and time will be announced later.
Garfield School District Re-2
The Re-2 school board isn’t seeing as much movement as Re-1, but three out of five seats are up for a vote in November’s school board election. All candidates are running for four-year terms.
In District B (Rifle/Silt area), Sally Brands is not seeking re-election. Jay Rickstrew and Nancy Whitcombe are running for that seat.
In District C (Rifle area), incumbent Jan Hubbell is running unopposed.
And in District D (Silt/New Castle area) Howard Stapleton is also running without opposition.
Garfield County School District No. 16
At Garfield County School District No. 16 in Parachute, just two seats out of a total of five are up for a vote, and neither faces a challenge.
Ron Palmer is the current school board president. He is running unopposed for re-election.
Current board member Roy Brubacher is not seeking re-election. Taking his place will be Jodi Williams, who is running unopposed.
