Smooth sailing for alternative commuters

Dear Editor,

Great work Carbondale!

If you haven’t been over to the railroad tracks in Carbondale lately, you have a surprise coming.

One mile of high-gloss ped/pedal pavement, an inline skater’s dream comes true. (Be sure to cross Eighth Street carefully.) I reckon we owe some serious thanks to Smiley Wise, Larry Ballenger and all of the hard-working people in public works who squeezed hours of trail time onto their jammed work list. Thanks for giving us the “Bull Bitch Tom Wallagher” of all personal-powered commuting alternatives. We have a diagonal shunt line to `live for’ and this is a sweet time of year to use it. No traffic, no fumes.

When you pass the RFTA barn, be sure to stop in and tell Mike Hermes how fine and smooth his pavement is. He will like to hear that because he is working hard on finding the resources to get this trail up to Emma and down to Glenwood. (Imagine a 40-mile cruise through our lovely valley.)

If you approve of the fine landscaping planted by Carbondale volunteers on either side of Eighth Street, be sure to tell Carol Padget. She’s the one out there, hand-watering everything the volunteers planted, when she’s not in the office of RFTA planning the expansion.

Horse people fear not! Equestrian needs are designed in. You are next, but don’t be afraid to speak up, the process likes all the encouragement it can get.

Way to go and thanks for hanging in there for the long-term and making this a great place to live.

John Hoffmann
