Soak up tips on water-wise gardening

Jim Knopf of Boulder will present a workshop on Water-Wise Gardening, at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 30, at Basalt Town Hall. The event will be hosted by the town’s water department.

Knopf is the author of two books, “The Xeriscape Flower Gardener” and “Waterwise Landscaping with Trees, Shrubs and Vines.” Both will be available for purchase at the workshop.

Armed with extensive plant lists plus a vivid and enlightening slide show, Knopf takes the viewer through the design possibilities for beautiful xeriscape gardens.

“Xeriscape is not gardening with cement and gravel,” he says, as he shows how one man filled his entire front and back yards with cement painted green, and a grouping of trash cans for added interest.

He shows before and after shots of yards with huge lawns converted to attractive, low-maintenance gardens for a fraction of the previous watering costs.

With the Basalt Water Department rate increase this year, there is even more incentive to forsake thirsty Kentucky bluegrass lawns and save treated water for other purposes.

Some of Knopf’s illustrations come from areas with extremely high water rates, such as Santa Fe, N.M., at $15 per thousand gallons. Compare this to Basalt’s $1.15 per thousand gallons for modest water use. The Santa Fe water rates converted many customers to xeriscape gardening and the results are often stunningly beautiful.

The Basalt Public Works Department wants area residents to seize this opportunity to gain money-saving water-wise gardening tips. Everyone is welcome.
