Solar arrays to power organic farming near Silt

A 77-acre solar farm is in the works for a site owned by the Eagle Springs Organic farming operation, to the east of the Garfield County Regional Airport.

The Garfield County commissioners on Tuesday approved the solar arrays, to be built on a 300-acre farm, owned by Kenneth Sack and perched on a mesa top overlooking the Colorado River to the north.

Sharing the mesa with the farm and the planned solar arrays are three natural gas well pads, according to a map of the site on file with Garfield County.

The project is to be built in three phases, and ultimately is expected to generate more than 16 megawatts of power, according to Sack.

The fields where crops are planted will be ringed by the three phases of solar arrays, and initially the power will be used to run the agricultural operation, according to Sack.

Later phases, he said, may generate power to be sold to utilities or to customers of a “solar garden” utility that he plans to organize.

A former pharmacist from Florida, Sack said he got interested in agriculture after seeing the film, “Food, Inc.,” which criticized the corporate food industry.

He said he has been operating his organic farm for the past year and a half, and sells produce at the Aspen Farmers Market.

Sack said he should begin generating power from the first phase within two months or so.

He is holding an open house at the farm, he said, from noon to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22, and the public is invited. Those interested are asked to call 876-2887 for directions.
