GLENWOOD SPRINGS ” Grand Junction Mayor Jim Spehar announced Thursday that he’s entering the race for the 3rd District congressional seat currently held by Scott McInnis.

The Mesa County Democrat met with local supporters at noon Thursday at Garfield County’s Courthouse Plaza in Glenwood Springs.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to provide common sense representation in Congress for this beautiful part of Colorado that’s been home to my family for more than a century,” Spehar said in a news release.

“I’ve been encouraged by the support offered as I’ve visited with community leaders from all parts of the district,” he said.

Spehar is the fifth Democrat to announce his candidacy for the seat. Randy Fricke, a Basalt car salesman and former ethanol industry lobbyist, is among them.

There are seven Republicans in the race, including state Rep. Gregg Rippy, R-Glenwood Springs.

Spehar is the owner of RST Associates, a consulting firm working with the public and private sectors in the areas of strategic planning, project management, government and media relations, the news release said.
