Riverside Middle School will finish off its football season tonight, but a football game is not the only battle the young Vikings will be fighting.

Before the game, which will be held at Coal Ridge High School and starts at 6 p.m., Riverside’s seventh- and eighth-graders will be presenting their mothers with pink corsages in honor of breast cancer survivors, as well as those who are currently battling cancer and those who have lost their lives due to cancer.

Women 18 and older interested in playing competitive or recreational hockey for the Glenwood Ice Queens are invited to an informational meeting tonight at 7 p.m. at the Glenwood Springs Community Center ice rink.

If you are interested and cannot attend the meeting, contact Lynsey Pulliam at 384-2970.

Sharpen your skates, ladies. The Aspen Mother Puckers A and B teams are holding an open tryout for the upcoming season. All adult recreational women hockey players are invited to attend and there is no charge for the first two skates.

On-ice sessions will be 6-7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Oct. 14 and 21, at the Aspen Ice Garden. Be dressed and ready to skate by 5:45 p.m. on Oct. 14 for a brief meeting.

Helmets are required and full hockey gear is strongly recommended. For more information, call Jeanne at 379-5581.

The Glenwood Springs Community Center is putting on the Fall Into Fitness 1K/5K Fun Run/Walk on Saturday, Oct. 9.

On tap for after the race are refreshments, free chiropractic and massage treatments by local professionals, a castle bounce and obstacle course for kids and free access to the community center for race registrants. The first 10 kids and 25 adults receive free T-shirts.

Call 384-6301 or visit for more information.

The third annual Banzai 5K Run/Walk comes to West Glenwood Springs on Oct. 9.

A scenic course, which consists of roads and dirt trails, takes runners into Ami’s Acres Campground and along the base of Storm King Mountain before heading up to the Glenwood Springs fish hatchery. Runners then cruise downhill to the finish line on Donegan Road.

The cost to enter is $10 and all proceeds benefit the Pauline S. Schneegas Wildlife Foundation in Silt and the Rifle Animal Shelter.

Race-morning registration begins at 8 a.m. at 0211 Donegan Road (just north of the Glenwood mall).

Contact Mike Vidakovich at 945-0979 or e-mail for more information.
