The Elks Hoop Shoot is slated for Saturday, Jan. 7, at Glenwood Springs Middle School. Registration starts at 9 a.m. and the shooting gets under way at 10 a.m.

The free throw contest is open to boys and girls in the following age groups: 8-9, 10-11, 12-13.

Bring a copy of your birth certificate. Winners will advance to the district competition in Rifle on Jan. 22.

The Glenwood Springs Recreation Department is offering a developmental basketball program for first- and second-grade students.

Dinky Dunkers is a non-competitive program for boys and girls that will focus on game fundamentals, including dribbling, passing, shooting and teamwork. It is suggested that players bring athletic shoes and a water bottle.

Two sessions will be offered and are open to all area first- and second-graders. Students may choose to participate in one or both sessions. The fee per session is $40 for Glenwood Springs Community Center members or $50 for non-members.

Session information:

• Sopris Elementary gym: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:30-5 p.m., starting Jan. 3 and ending on Jan. 26 (no class on Jan. 12).

• Glenwood Springs Elementary gym: Mondays and Wednesdays, 3:30-5 p.m., beginning Jan. 23 and ending on Feb. 13.

Early registration is now under way for Three Rivers Little League, which is open to players from Aspen to Glenwood Springs and Edwards to Glenwood.

Registration fees for baseball are $100 and softball is $75 if postmarked by Jan. 20. Player registration forms are available at the TRLL website ( and can be mailed, with payment, to: TRLL, Box 1246 Carbondale, Colo., 81623.

A late registration will be held in February in conjunction with tryouts and will be accepted on a space-available basis. Late registration fees are $150 for baseball and $100 for softball. Some hardship scholarships are available.

TRLL is also looking for adult volunteer help, including player agents in the Basalt and Edwards areas, coaches for all ages in all areas, and umpires. The umpire positions will be paid and training will be provided.

Local businesses, teams and individuals are invited to participate in the 2012 Sunlight Town Race Series.

The Sunlight Mountain Resort series consists of four races (Sundays in February and one Sunday in March).

Register by Jan. 22. The cost is $50 per person or $250 per team. It is $10 for an individual entry into a single race.
