DENVER (AP) ” A spring storm brought snow the Colorado high country Tuesday while drenching Front Range cities with rain and triggering floods and hail on the plains.

Truckers were ordered to chain up because of snow and ice on some mountain roads, and schools from the mountains and foothills canceled classes.

Flooding was reported in northeast Colorado, northwest Kansas and southwest Nebraska, leaving some rural roads impassable. Quarter-size hail fell in southeastern Colorado.

A winter storm warning was issued for a swath of Colorado from the Wyoming border near Fort Collins south to Colorado Springs. A flood warning was issued for northeast Colorado and a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for the southeast corner of the state.

Interstate 25 was closed about 14 miles north of the New Mexico border due to a downed power line, but it was not immediately clear if that was caused by the wintry weather.

Major school closures included Evergreen Middle School and Evergreen High School, along with others in the Jefferson County Public School District located in mountainous areas. To the south, Academy, Lewis-Palmer and Falcon schools were among those shut down for the day.

Mountain areas were forecast to see up to two feet of snow by the time the storm system rolled out of the state.
